Lady Hester Stanhope – the beautiful, highly educated niece and chief of staff of
the Prime Minister William Pitt the Younger – left her homeland of England for the
Mediterranean and the Middle East. This journey –visiting Malta, Greece, Egypt, Syria,
and Palestine, among other places – would lead to a life-
Gertrude Bell, gained a first in modern history and politics at Cambridge, at the turn of the century. After a prodigious period as a mountaineer, during which she bested Monte Blanc, she added Arabic to her range of languages, singly explored Arabia by camel train and became a quoted authority on the archaeology of the region. From that, she became the principal advisor to HMG on Middle Eastern politics and was the guiding diplomat in resolving the vast, open and disputatious Arab lands into defined countries.
Florence Nightingale was a writer, social reformer and founder of modern nursing. She became a statistician and administrator, advising and guiding the War Office on aspects of military medical provision.
