A Victorian Battle of the Sexes
A book of fifty individual tales in which Sherlock Holmes’s older sister, Scarlett,
torments his lovelorn friend John Watson.
Each tale is a complete short story allowing the reader to dip in and out and thus
spend as much or as little time enjoying the intrigue without losing the plot.
How an academic woman contends with Victorian paternalism.
The Victorian world of Sherlock Holmes has engaged so many readers in its gas-lit,
smoky streets. It was a century close to our own but visibly, and sometimes shudderingly,
different. Women at home were part of what had become comfortable lives for the new
middle class. Clever, sassy women could leap the walls like cats, and fight for
fame. It took conventional chaps quite aback.
